BRITISH police “developed” evidence against
Madeleine
McCann’s parents over their daughter’s disappearance, a
senior official has claimed.
Alexander Wykeham Ellis, the UK’s ambassador to Portugal, told his
American counterpart that police in Britain were working with Portuguese
officers to build a case against
Gerry and Kate McCann, both 42.
The comments published by WikiLeaks suggest UK detectives had a far
greater role in the investigation than at first thought.
In a cable to Washington, US ambassador Al Hoffman wrote: “Ellis
admitted that the British police had developed the current evidence
against the McCann parents.”
Madeleine disappeared in Portugal in May 2007.

A
spokesman
for the McCanns said: “There was absolutely no evidence to implicate
them in Madeleine’s disappearance.
“They continue to work tirelessly on the search for their daughter.”
