GORDON BROWN
PM |
GORDON BROWN (Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time of
Madeleine's disappearance; currently Prime Minister) (56)
Year 2007
James Gordon Brown was born in Govan, in Glasgow, Scotland,
although media have occasionally given his place of birth as
Giffnock, Renfrewshire, where his parents were living at the
time. Gordon was brought up with his brothers John and
Andrew Brown in a manse in Kirkcaldy — the largest town in
Fife. He is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Labour MP for
Kirkcaldy & Cowdenbeath. He took office on 27 June 2007,
three days after becoming leader of the Labour Party. Prior
to this he served as the Deputy Prime Minister/Chancellor of
the Exchequer in Tony Blair's government from 1997 to 2007.
On May 16, Gordon Brown met with members of McCann family
and “pledged to help in anyway (he) can". Gordon Brown has
personally intervened in the search for missing
four-year-old Madeleine McCann after her parents became
frustrated by the lack of progress in the police
investigation. After a series of telephone conversations
with Madeleine's father, the Chancellor requested assistance
from the Foreign Office and the Home Office. He asked that
pressure be brought to bear on the Portuguese authorities to
allow more information about the inquiry to be made public.
A source close to the McCann family said: "Within a day of
the family speaking to Gordon Brown and expressing their
frustration about certain things, the whole attitude of the
Portuguese police changed and they found them much more
open. The sequence of events suggests some influence was
exerted from above." The first foreign visitor to No 10
Downing Street after Gordon Brown became Prime Minister was
his Portuguese counterpart Jose Socrates. Speaking to a
press conference afaterwards, Mr Brown thanked the
Portuguese authorities for their efforts in trying to find
missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann. And Mr Brown also
said the British Government would do all it could to help
locate the youngster. |

MOHAMMED SARWAR (MP for Glasgow Central) (55)
Mohammad Sarwar (born in Pirmahal Pakistan) is the Labour
member of Parliament for Glasgow Central, Scotland. He was
the UK's first Muslim MP. He was first elected as the MP for
Glasgow Govan in the 1997 general election. Sarwar was
suspended from holding office within the Labour Party in
1997 when he was charged with election offences, but he was
acquitted in 1999 and the suspension was lifted. Sarwar, one
of the best known MPs in Scotland, has a reputation for
standing up to injustice and is well respected throughout
Scotland. Sarwar has estimated assets of £16 million, mainly
from the family wholesale cash and carry business, United
Wholesale Grocers. In 2007 his son, Athif Sarwar, was
convicted of an £850,000 missing trader fraud in a company,
United Wholesale (Scotland) Limited, of which he was
Managing Director. Mohammad Sarwar was a remunerated
director of the company, but not involved in the fraud. Phil
McCann said: "Mohammed Sarwar, the Glasgow MP, has been
instrumental in moving this campaign forward and has been a
source of comfort during a very trying time. With his help
we have engagements in London. We will attend Prime
Minister's question time and lobby MPs and lords in
Westminster, where we will hand out yellow ribbons." |

DAVID MILIBAND (Secretary of State, Foreign & Commonwealth

Labour MP for South Shields; he entered Parliament on 7 June
2001 — General election. He currently holds the post of
Secretary of State, Foreign & Commonwealth Office (since
28th June 2007). The parents of missing Madeleine McCann
plan to appeal directly to Foreign Secretary David Miliband
as pressure mounts on them as suspects behind her
disappearance. David Hughes, one of the McCann family's
inner circle of advisers, said: "If the situation progresses
much further, we'll make direct contact again with Mr
Miliband to ask for his help and support." Mr Miliband first
became involved with the McCann case in June, but is another
who has remained silent without officially withdrawing his
support. David Miliband was named as the person who would
attend the signing of the Lisbon Treaty in December instead
of Gordon Brown - Gordon Brown attended himself in the end.

JOHN KAYN
According to Paulo Reis, John Kayn is a "very British"
gentleman who was with the McCanns, working for the Foreign
Office, when they went to Morocco, on June 10, according to
a French publication." At the press conference held in Rabat
on 11 June, the English couple were accompanied by a man
"very British" which was presented to us as an English
diplomat from the Foreign Office. John Kayn accompanies the
English couple in their journey over the past two weeks.
According to a source close to the case, the English have
put their best case agent. The English diplomat told us a
few minutes before the press conference: "Maddie's parents
are ordinary people who spent their holidays when this
tragedy happened, they are not accustomed to the press,"
while we are asking take that into account.
