Critic of the McCanns crucified on Sky
Brenda Leyland was denounced for saying
that Maddie's parents should "suffer for
the rest of the rest of their life."
A campaign on the internet social
network is attacking the British media
for the "cruel" treatment inflicted on
Brenda Leyland, an English woman who was
found dead day before yesterday, after
being publicly denounced by a television
station for having attacked on the
internet Kate and Gerry McCann, parents
of Maddie - an English child who
disappeared in the Algarve on 3 May
2007.
The cause of death has not yet been
determined, but the police say there is
no evidence of a crime. The 63 year old
pensioner was found dead in a room at
the Hotel Marriot in Leicester.
Brenda Leyland was denounced last
Thursday by Sky News television as one
of the persons who have attacked the
McCanns. On Twitter, the lady posted a
message : "Q How long must the McCanns
suffer" answer "for the rest of their
miserable lives". The journalist, Martin
Brunt, from Sky, who followed the Maddie
case and was very critical of the PJ,
confronted her in front of her house -
only about 24 kilometres from the
McCanns residence. Brenda Leyland
answered she was "entitled to that". The
woman disappeared on Friday.
Ben, 20 years, Brenda's son, published a
tribute to his mother : "I love you and
will miss you forever. I am love and
light thanks to you:" The campaign on
facebook "Sack Martin Brunt" since
yesterday has more than 1400 likes.
Along with a petition to discuss "trials
by television", the campaign denounces
the alleged cruelty by Sky in revealing
the face of Brenda, who had studied at a
convent school. Katie Hopkins, columnist
for the Sun, published on Twitter :"How
many more must die before the McCanns
accept their negligence is at the heart
of all their grief? Enough already." Sky
News refused to connect this death with
their divulging the woman's identity.
