The body of a young girl washed ashore in the US has been examined by police
for links to Madeleine McCann after evidence that it could have been swept
across from Europe.
The body of a girl, named 'Baby Grace' by police, was found by a fisherman, crammed into a blue plastic storage box on a beach in Galveston Bay, Texas,
last week.
Galveston County Sheriff's Department received several tip offs that the
description - between 2 and 3-years-old with long blonde or light brown wavy
hair - matched Madeleine.
The US
police then contacted Interpol, the FBI and Portuguese detectives to consider
the possibility that the girl could be Madeleine.
A post-mortem examination found that Baby Grace had been dead for at least two
weeks and sustained a skull fracture.
But Major Ray Tuttoilmondo, a spokesman for the
Sheriff's Department, said that it has now concluded that the body is not Madeleine.
"We're confident it's not her," he said.
The Gulf Intercoastal Waterway, where the box
containing the body was found, is a major commercial port.
Galveston County Crime Stoppers has set up a memorial fund to pay for the
girl's funeral and an account to offer rewards for anyone who helps
investigators lead them to the killer. |
