It’s an unsolved case that continues to grab headlines in the U.K. On Friday, the British Prime Minister ordered the police to reopen and review the files of Madeleine McCann, a British girl who had gone missing four years ago.

The four-year-old disappeared from her hotel bed on a family trip to Portugal in 2007, while her parents were dining with friends.

The initial investigation was closed in 2008, but the parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, kept trying. They traveled back and forth from Portugal, launched a website to help raise funds, and released a book titled Madeleine McCann on Wednesday.

In the book, Kate McCann claimed she may have missed a clue on the day her daughter disappeared.

“‘But that morning,’ her Mom Kate writes, ‘Madeleine had said, ‘Why didn’t you come when Sean and I cried last night?’’ She changes the subject quickly but Kate now writes she might’ve missed a huge important clue. ‘It is my belief there was somebody either in, or trying to get in, the children’s bedroom that night.’ She also reveals a resort staff posted a note that a predator might have seen that her children were unattended…”

The McCanns wrote a plea on Thursday to the British Prime Minister for help. And Cameron later responded in an open letter to The Sun, promising the help of Home Secretary and the Metropolitan Police.

But not everybody is as supportive as the Prime Minister. A Politics Home editor says the intervention “could have political repercussions.” He talks to a member of the Met police, who says--

“There is clearly an issue about the resources being used and are they in effect saying that the Met is the default investigator for every case in the world involving a British citizen?”

The British press is reporting the McCanns have faced public backlash. Some evidence of that can be found in Sky News’ reader comments, where one wrote...

“Very uncool David Cameron. Why should the government get involved in what is basically a Portuguese criminal case? … Will NSY prosecute [the McCanns] for child neglect at last? They should. Bad, power crazy, money seeking people.”

But a blogger for CanIDoIt.org says, people should stop being harsh to the parents.

“…I am appalled by the many people out there … accusing the McCann’s of child neglect and heartlessly dismiss their desperate pleas for support… The only crime that Kate and Gerry McCann have committed is that they thought that their decision … to leave the children unattended would probably be OK…”
