The British police refuse to comment on the
reference to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann made in the North
American diplomatic telegrams released by the WikiLeaks organisation,
alleging that the investigation corresponds to the Portuguese
authorities. “The investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine
McCann is led by the Portuguese (police)” said a Leicestershire police
spokesman, who refused to comment about the contribution made by British
officers in this case.
According to the British Ambassador in Lisbon at the time of Madeleine
McCann’s disappearance (2007), Alexander Wykeham Ellis, the British
police helped to find evidence against the girl’s parents, who were made
arguidos and finally cleared.
Leicestershire police, who coordinated the collaboration with the PJ due
to this being the region where the McCanns live, does not confirm the
content of the telegram nor whether it is considered important to
re-open the case. “Our role continues to be that of coordinating and
completing any investigations in the UK and to follow up the diligencies
requested by the Portuguese authorities”, said a source. |
