British police assisted in the McCanns
investigation |

The latest document released by Wikileaks discloses that the US
ambassador was told that UK police assisted in building up evidence
against
Madeline McCann's
family. Madeline McCann's parents were
official suspects during the police investigation of their child's
disappearance in Portugal.
Al Hoffman who is the US ambassador met with Alexander Wykeham Ellis who
is the UK ambassador. The meeting was arranged some time after the
McCann's
were officially announced as
suspects in the case. The McCann's
commented that there was no evidence to suggest that they were involved
in the disappearance of their daughter.
In a secret diplomatic cable Hoffman said that without going into
specific details the UK ambassador had said that the British police had
assisted with gathering evidence against the McCanns and that officials
from Britain and Portugal were co-operating with each other.
The statement that has been connected with the ambassador seems to
oppose the common belief that the Portuguese police were the motivation
behind the McCanns inclusion as suspects in the investigation.
The release of this confidential cable happened as the Wikileaks founder
is going to court for a bail hearing. He was apprehended by police
because the Swedish police want to question him about sexual misconduct
allegations.
In one of the cables that was revealed by Wikileaks Hoffman said that
the disappearance of the McCann's daughter had been placed in the
spotlight by the international media. He added that there was
controversy surrounding the announcement that the child's parents were
suspects in the case. He continued to say that the UK ambassador
believed that the media attention was to be expected but that officials
should not make their comments on the case known to the public |
