of apartment from Tapas Bar
At the Ocean Club all four families had apartments in
Waterside Gardens Block 5. Gerry’s and Kate’s ground floor
apartment, 5a, was on a street corner. The group occupied
two of the neighbouring apartments, 5b and 5d, and another
on the floor above.
The group first spent time together at Dave and Fiona’s
wedding in Italy in 2003. Now they had eight children
between them. Madeleine was the oldest, her fourth birthday
a week after they would return from the Algarve.
Relatives spoke out after Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry
and their friends were accused of maintaining a pact of
silence over the events of the night the girl was snatched.
One report claimed police were concerned over
inconsistencies in their statements and were treating the
nine as suspects.
McCann's
---- on the night Madeleine disappeared are nearly all
doctors or other professionals and all have vigorously
protested the couple's innocence.

first time was eleven years ago, before he got married. David and
Fiona have been together for seven years and they have two children.
They were the only ones in the group who used the babyphone system

Jane Michelle Tanner:
36
[apartment 5D
- Ground floor]
She provided the most crucial evidence, saying she saw a man carry a
child from the apartment wrapped in a blanket at 9.15pm. She thought
nothing of it until the alarm was raised an hour later. Her
description of the child's pyjamas matched Madeleine's.
[The mother-of-two Ella
O'Brien, aged 3 years and Evie O'Brien, aged one year.
She said the man was
5ft 10in tall and aged about 35. Her description of the child's
clothing matched Madeleine's pyjamas. Miss Tanner has never publicly
discussed what she saw.]

a doctor, who worked in Leicester. He and Ms Tanner have two
children, the older one the same age as Madeleine. This daughter,
the newspaper Sol reported yesterday, was vomiting on the night the
toddler disappeared, so Ms Tanner spent much of the evening away
from the dinner table. She is a key witness on the night of the
disappearance. 9:15pm
Jane Tanner told police that at this time she went to check on her
daughter, who was ill, and recalled seeing Mr McCann talking to Mr
Wilkins. As she went into the apartment, she saw a man aged around
35 carrying a little girl wrapped in a blanket. Jane Tanner, a
38-year-old marketing executive, was the first of the "Tapas Nine"

Leicester before moving to Devon. He left the dining table for 25
minutes to look after his young daughter, who was ill. In August

newspapers that he was to be named as a suspect.

with Gerry McCann in Leicester before moving to London with his wife
Rachael. He checked on the McCann children at 9.30pm, but did not
look to see if Madeleine was in her bed.
[Together with his wife and Dr Russell
O'Brien, he was one of three witnesses brought by Portuguese police
to a meeting in July 2007 with Robert Murat, then the only named
suspect, to discuss discrepancies over their accounts of what
happened that night. They had said they saw Murat near the apartment
but he insisted he was at home all evening.Mathew

Dianne Webster:
[apartment 5H - first floor] Fiona Payne's mother. She told police that on the night of
Madeleine's disappearance each couple was responsible for looking
after their own children. She has given no interviews.
DIANNE WEBSTER (nee Hebenton) (63) Year02007
Dianne Webster, 63, the oldest element of the group. This credit
controller is the mother of Fiona Payne and the grandmother of two
of the children from the group that was spending their holidays in
the Ocean Club.
Dianne told the PJ that she could not be precise
about who left the Tapas restaurant during dinner on the night that
Madeleine disappeared. Fiona’s mother is also the only witness that
said each couple was responsible for their own children, and did not
enter their friends’ apartments. After Kate returned to the
restaurant – visibly upset and yelling “they’ve taken our Madeleine”
– Dianne was the only one who stayed seated at the Tapas’ table,
leaving some 5 minutes later.
At 10.15pm she returned to the
restaurant to get her belongings (purse and keys?). Dianne Webster,
born in 1944 lives in Bedford (60/70 miles from Leicester) together

NAJOVA CHEKAYA (Aerobics Instructor/Quiz Organiser)
Najova Chekaya is the aerobics teacher running the quiz. She was
invited over to the McCann table by Mr McCann himself when the game
ended at 9.30.
She stayed for half an hour. She later claimed to friends that
nobody left the table. Najova Chekaya lives in Flitwick, Bedford.
She was calling the quiz on the
night of
3rd May 2007.
She joined the Tapas group at their table
at Gerry McCann's
request.
I think it was around 9.30pm, although
I cannot confirm this.
It is thought that she stayed at
the table for about 30 minute
