Kate and Gerry McCann join hundreds of runners on Clapham
Common for Miles for Missing People 10k
Your Local Guardian
By Ross Logan, Chief Reporter 2:10pm Saturday 17th May 2014
An estimated 500 people ran in memory of lost loved ones this morning,
during the annual Miles for Missing People 10k in Clapham Common.
Participants wore posters of people registered
missing, as both an appeal and a tribute to those who have disappeared.
More than £20,000 has been raised
from the event so far, organised by charity Missing People.
Among the runners were Kate and Gerry McCann, whose
daughter Madeleine disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal in 2007.
A runner carrying an appeal for missing Anthony Stammers,
27
Peter Lawrence, whose 35-year-old daughter Claudia vanished while walking to her home in North
Shields in 2009, gave a speech before the runners set off.
Also watching the race was Rachel Elias, Missing People
spokeswoman and brother of former Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richie Edwards, who has been missing since 1995.
Claudia Lawrence's father Peter delivers a speech
Missing People communications manager Spencer Gasson said: "It was a brilliant day, with fantastic
weather. There was a really good vibe about it this year.
"We also had a number of performances from the Rock
Choir in London who sang a few songs.
"But the main thing is people running had missing people posters on
their backs.
"Some were running for missing family members like Gerry and Kate, others just took posters and
ran for people they didn't know.
"The nice thing is, that way, the missing person is still remembered."

The Miles For Missing People 10k is part of Forget-Me-Not month,
which in itself is a build up to National Missing Children's Day on Sunday, May 25.
That day will see the launch
of the enhanced Child Rescue Alert system, a partnership between Missing People, the National Crime Agency and communications
firm Groupcall.
It will see messages sent out via social media, text and email, alerting the public to a child
who is known to have been abducted or is at risk.
About 500 people took part in today's run, which
has so far raised more than £20,000 for Missing People
Missing People will also be tweeting
appeals for missing children every half hour for 24 hours on May 25, and is asking followers to retweet the messages to as
wide a audience as possible. For more information about Missing People and its work, visit the website.

Kate and Gerry McCann, who earlier this month marked the seventh
anniversary of their daughter's disappearance, ran the Miles for Missing People race.
The horn to start the
race was sounded by Peter Lawrence as the investigation into his daughter, who went missing in 2009, continues.
The
race on Clapham Common in London came days after North Yorkshire Police arrested Michael Snelling, 59, on suspicion of murdering
the missing chef.
The former lab technician was questioned by officers and released on bail.
Speaking after the 10km and 3km races, Mr Lawrence said: "A
lot of people are here with a poster of their missing loved one, and it's right to display it, show what the charity is
for.
"I think it's always a poignant event coming here because you see all these people with missing shirts
on them with posters and you just think this really needs to be out there.
"We all need to be together, we
are all a big family.
"It [Missing People] is an absolute lifeline.
"Both for people who
are missing, but most importantly the families of the thousands of people who are missing.
"Most people you
talk to of course don't know what it's like to have a family member missing."
The annual event, run by charity Missing People and now in its fifth
year, raises money for the organisation.
Mr Lawrence added that even if his daughter is found he will continue
to support the charity.
He said: "I regularly meet other people with missing members of their family, and
it's just being able to be together in the knowledge we all talk the same language.
"Even if Claudia is
found I will still be here for the sake of other people and the sake of the charity."
The event was also attended
by Rachel Elias whose brother is missing Richey Edwards, the former guitarist and vocalist of the Manic Street Preachers.
Mrs Elias, whose brother went missing almost two decades ago, said the charity has provided vital support for her
and her family.
She said: "My brother Richard has been missing for 20 years
next year, so it is an especially poignant time for us.
"We're in exactly the same position now as we
were 19 years ago, and we still have absolutely no information as to his fate. That is such a difficult thing, living with
that constant uncertainty.
"We keep going through the support of the charity."
Mrs Elias,
from south Wales, added that she is unable to listen to music by the Manic Street Preachers as she finds it "too difficult".
Around 500 people took part in today's races, with starters including the McCanns. Children could complete a 1km
course.
Jo Youle, Missing People chief executive, said: "We're all here in solidarity with other families
facing unimaginable heartache when someone goes missing.
"But also today is a day of hope. It is so important
to keep the search alive and know that one day their lovely, special person could be back with them.
"We have
some families today who were here last year, and that's hard to think that they've had to face another year without
knowing.
"But I think there is some comfort in families being here together in solidarity."

The father of missing university chef Claudia Lawrence has spoken of the poignancy of an annual
charity running race, as the search for clues surrounding his daughter's disappearance continues.
Peter Lawrence
said the Miles for Missing People event, held on Clapham Common in London, offered a chance to unite with those suffering
with the uncertainty of a missing loved one, and helped to raise crucial charity funds.
The event, by charity Missing
People and now in its fifth year, was also supported by Kate and Gerry McCann - parents of missing British girl Madeleine
- and Rachel Elias, sister of former Manic Street Preachers guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards.
The race came days after North Yorkshire Police questioned and
released on bail former lab technician Michael Snelling, 59, on suspicion of murdering Ms Lawrence, who went missing from
York in March 2009. An emotional Mr Lawrence, who sounded the air horn to start the 10km and 3km races, said: "A

her brother. She said: "My brother Richard has been missing for 20 years next year, so it is an especially
poignant time for us. "We're in exactly the same position now as we were 19 years ago, and we still have
absolutely no information as to his fate. That is such a difficult thing, living with that constant uncertainty. "We keep going through the support of the charity." And she said she was unable to listen to the music
of her brother, who vanished when the Manics were beginning to attract international airplay in February 1995. She
said: "I don't listen to the Manics records, I do find that too difficult." Around 500 people took
part in today's races, with starters including the McCanns. Children could complete a 1km course. Jo Youle,
Missing People chief executive, said: "We're all here in solidarity with other families facing unimaginable heartache

"forget me not" month campaign. It has just launched a Child Rescue Alert service, encouraging people to sign up
to missing children notices from police. Organisers say the service will be used for only those children suspected
of being in serious danger. For more information visit childrescuealert.org.uk. To support families of missing
